Alaska Yukon Trip 17
Day 7
September 28, 2009:
We were woken by rough seas around 7:00 AM again. We are headed to Sitka on the Pacific ocean this morning. Our route takes us through some narrow channels between Baranof and Chichagof Islands. The order of the day is more wind, rain, and rough seas; with the odd sucker hole to get a persons hopes up.
We arrived in Sitka about 1:45 pm. We only had a couple of hours and made the mistake of taking a bus downtown instead of the more expensive, and crowded, shuttle. By the time we got downtown we didn’t have a lot of time. We were able to grab lunch from a street vendor – electric grilled fresh salmon (without any heavy sauces or seasonings) and rice. It was probably the best meal we had all trip!
After lunch we just had enough time to walk to the harbor before we had to call a cab to get back. We were a little bit worried we were going to be late. We took all our luggage down to the car before the car deck was closed again – to make it easier when we had to disembark at Juneau. We spent the rest of time onboard talking to other passengers and playing cards. We went to the berth to get a bit of sleep and before you knew it they were announcing the Juneau stop at 1:30 AM.
We were to switch ships and all passengers and vehicles were unloaded. We had a short drive to our B&B: Alexis Suites at Auke Bay. It was dark and there were no signs. We accidentally walked into the wrong house. Ooops! Get some signs!
